Personal Statement
  • Hon. Jaime A. Rios was elected to the NY State Supreme Ct in 1995. In 2001, upon the recommendation of the Chief Administration Judge and with the approval of the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division he was elevated to the position of Associate Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the 2nd, 11th and 13th judicial districts. The Appellate Term is composed of five justices, who convene in three member panels to decide all appeals taken from the lower Civil, Housing, Small Claims, and Criminal Courts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Contemporaneous with his duties as an appellate jurist, he presides over a civil term of the State Supreme Court handling all eminent domain proceedings commenced in Queens County. Justice Rios has also presided over the trial of hundreds of felony prosecutions, and is designated to preside over death penalty murder cases. In his 23 + years as a member of the judiciary, Justice Rios has enjoyed favorable approval ratings of Independent screening committees and Bar associations. Justice Rios also devotes time to legal education. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Fordham Law School, and has lectured at Queens College.

  • 1994-95 Judge of the Civil Court of NYC [elected] Presided over the adjudication of 100's of civil lawsuits including those brought in Small Claims Court.
  • 1985-1994 Judge of the Housing Court [appointed] Handled over 100 landlord tenant disputes per week. Made periodic visits to residential housing to ensure the preservation of the housing stock of the City.
  • 1980-1984 Deputy Commissioner/ Special Counsel of the New York City Police Department. Made recommendations to the Police Commissioner on issues related to discipline, education and recruitment of personnel.
