Personal Statement
  • The Honorable Gerald Lebovits has been a Manhattan Housing Court judge since 2001. Before that he was a law clerk for a New York State Supreme Court justice and a lawyer with the Legal Aid Society. He teaches law part time at Columbia and St. John’s law schools. Judge Lebovits has been a Make-A-Wish Foundation wish granter for terminally ill children and a Harvard-Radcliffe Program math tutor. He is the president of the Association of Housing Court Judges and the New York State Bar Association’s Landlord-Tenant Committee’s co-chair. He served with the New York City Civil Court’s Association of Small Claims Arbitrators (president), Joint Committee on Fee Disputes (chair), the New York City Bar Association’s Civil Court Committee (secretary), and the Network of Bar Leaders (First Vice President). He has written New York Residential Landlord-Tenant Law and Procedure (3d ed. 2010), Advanced Judicial Opinion Writing (7th ed. 2004), and more than 150 law-journal articles. Judge Lebovits has been found “Most Highly Qualified” for election to the Civil Court five times, “Approved” by the New York City Bar Association, and “Exceptionally Well Qualified” by the Joint Bar Association.
