Personal Statement
  • Prior to embarking on her judicial career, Judge Kaplan had a distinguished career in public service. For eleven years she provided subperb legal representation to indigent people accused of crimes at the Legal Aid Society, earning the Orison S. Marden Award, the Society's highest honor. Judge Kaplan served as Principal Court Attorney to Hon. Juanita Bing Newton, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Iniatives and later as Chief Management Ananlyst and Project Counsel for the New York State Drug Treatment Program. In her ten years on the Bench, she has served with distinction, first in the Criminal Court of the City of New York, presiding in a specialized part. And for the last five years, as an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court, Civil Branch. Since 2008, she has presided over a Matrimonial Part, handling all aspects of divorce cases. She has demonstrated that she is an even-handed, thoughtful, patient and efficient jurist, deciding cases in a timely fashion, and always focusing on how to ultimately resolve the matter expeditiously so the litigants and their innocent children caught in the middle can move forward with as little financial and emotional damage as possible.
