Personal Statement
  • Hon. Rita Connerton, age fifty-three, is a native of Binghamton, New York. A 1982 graduate of Albany Law School , she has worked in family law for over twenty years. In private practice, she represented parents and family in Family Court and served as a Law Guardian for children. In 1990 she began work as a Court Attorney doing legal research and drafting decisions for Family Court judges. She had the unique opportunity to read, write and reflect on the issues of family life. In 2001 Rita Connerton was elected to serve as a Broome County Family Court Judge. She hears child custody and visitation cases, support violations, paternity and adoption matters, family violence cases, child neglect and abuse cases as well as foster care reviews and termination of parental rights petitions. She presides over a Family Treatment Court Part. Two years ago, she became a Supervising Family Court Judge for the ten counties in the Sixth Judicial District. She is a Co-Chair of the NYS Bar Association Task Force on Family Courts and also serves on the Law Guardian Advisory Board for the Appellate Division, Third Department.
