Personal Statement
  • Prior to taking the bench, the Hon. Peter P. Sweeney practiced in the filed of civil litigation for over 15 years, representing both plaintiffs and defendants, in a broad range of cases, including civil rights, medical malpractice, negligence, labor law and products liability. As a judge, he has presided over hundreds of jury and bench trials and has published numerous decisions involving a vast array of legal issues. He has been a regular faculty member of the Judicial Institute of the State of New York, teaching both judges and court attorneys classes on New York’s No-Fault and Consumer Credit Law. Justice Sweeney had the distinct honor of being appointed the Supervising Judge of the Civil Court, Kings County in 2009 and served in that position until his designation as Acting Justice of the Supreme Court. Justice Sweeney has been found qualified for the office of Civil Court Judge by the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission, the Judicial Screening Committee of the Kings County Democratic Party, LeGal’s Judicial Screening Panel, the Committee on the Judiciary of the Association of the Bar and the Joint Minority Bar Association Judicial Screening Panel.
