Personal Statement
  • Justice Betsy Barros was elected to the Kings County Supreme Court in 1997 and has the distinction of being the first Latina woman to serve in this capacity. She received her B.A.from Cornell University in 1979, and her J.D. from NYU School of Law in 1982. A dedicated public servant, she served as a a public defender, a Special Assistant Attorney General prosecuting corruption in the criminal justice system, and was Bureau Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau and a felony trial bureau in the Kings County D.A's Office. Justice Barros has presided over criminal, matrimonial and guardianship matters. She has dedicated herself to diverting offenders into alternative to incarceration programs, successfully transitioning rehabilitated offenders back into the community. As a guardianship judge, her cases involve incapacitated individuals in need of protection due to physical abuse and/or financial abuse. She is member of the Brooklyn Bar Assoc., PRBA, NYS Guardianship Advisory Committee, AJHH, and the Cornell University Advisory Council. The daughter of Chilean immigrants, Justice Barros was born and raised in Brooklyn, where she continues to reside with her husband.
