Personal Statement
  • “Approved” – Association of the Bar of the City of New York; “Highly Approved” – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Law Association of Greater New York; “Qualified” – Metropolitan Black Bar Association/Joint Minority Bar Association. Verna L. Saunders was appointed Judge of the Housing Court in 2008 and has worked throughout New York City having presided over thousands of landlord-tenant cases in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. Prior to becoming a Judge, Verna worked as an attorney with the New York City Civil Court. She represented municipal union workers with Teamsters-Local 237 and she worked on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS at the AIDS Center of Queens County, Inc. Currently, Judge Saunders is a mentor for young people and works with Legal Outreach, Inc., encouraging youth to pursue excellence and careers in the law. Judge Saunders has taught Real Estate and Business Law at Monroe College. She also sits on the Board of the Judicial Friends and is an Honorary Board Member of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association. Judge Saunders is a proud graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, The Pennsylvania State University, and CUNY School of Law.
