Personal Statement
  • On February 5, 2008, the Governor appointed the Honorable Cheryl E. Chambers as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department. Prior to this appointment, Justice Chambers served as a Justice of the Supreme Court in Kings County for nine years, where she presided over complex criminal matters as well as selected personal injury cases. From 1995 through 1998, Justice Chambers served in the Civil Court of the City of New York and by designation in the Criminal Court of the City of New York. Prior to her judicial experience, she served nearly a decade in the Kings County District Attorney's Office, where she held positions as an assistant district attorney, Deputy Chief in the Trial Division, Chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau and Special Assistant District Attorney. She was the first African American to come through the ranks and become a bureau chief. As a lifetime resident of Brooklyn, Justice Chambers would be honored to continue to serve the citizens of this great state on the Supreme Court.
