Personal Statement
  • Judge Rumsey has received the highest possible ratings from the State's Judicial Screening panel for the 6th JD ("Qualified"), and the Broome Co. Bar Association ("Highly Qualified"). He Served in a Military Police Unit of U.S. Army National Guard. After 18 years of general practice in central NYS, elected Supreme Court Justice in 6th JD for a 14 year term. With chambers in Cortland County, Judge Rumsey has been assigned cases in all 10 counties in the judicial district, and presided over jury trials in Manhattan. He has served as Acting Admin. Judge for the 6th JD, and lectured for several bar associations, and the United Health Services Teaching Day in Binghamton. Judge Rumsey has nearly 50 decisions published by the NY Law Reporting Bureau, has served on the Executive Comm. of the Association of Justices of Supreme Court of NYS, and is a member of the NYS, Cortland, Broome, and Tompkins Co. Bar Associations, as well as a life member of the NYS Bar Foundation. As a former chair of the Cortland Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, Judge Rumsey remains active in his church and Rotary Club. He has been married 30 years to Marie Patten Rumsey, with three children.
