Personal Statement
  • I have been a judge for twenty-nine years and presently sit in the Criminal Term of the Supreme Court in Kings County. In 1996, in the first capital case brought in New York City, People v Michael Shane Hale, I declared the plea bargaining provisions of the death penalty statue unconstitutional. That decision, was unanimously affirmed by the Court of Appeals and subsequently sustained by the Supreme Court of the U.S., and is now the law of this State. In March of 2005, I was appointed as Acting Surrogate of Kings County. In January of 2006, I returned to the Criminal Term of the Supreme Court and tried one of the City’s Most highly publicized murder cases, People v Troy Hendrix and Kayson Pearson. During my twenty-nine year tenure I have been the recipient of many awards and honors including Person of the Year, Kings County Criminal Bar Association, Distinguished Judicial Service, Board of Judges of the City Court of New York City, Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession, Brooklyn Law School Italian American Law Students’ Association and the Distinguish Service Award for Servicing as Acting Surrogate of the Kings County Surrogate’s Court, The Brooklyn Bar Association.
