Candidate Biography
Personal Statement
  • The Independent Screening Panel, City Bar, Metropolitan Black Bar, Puerto Rican Bar, Dominican Bar, Asian American Bar, and LGBT Law Association all gave me their highest rating, both for reelection to Civil Court and for Supreme Court. For 35 years I have handled complex, groundbreaking litigation, as a civil rights lawyer protecting minority and disenfranchised groups, and as a judge, making even powerful institutions obey the law, but ensuring fairness and equal justice to all. I have devoted my career to public service, especially the disadvantaged in desperate circumstances, trailblazing to secure affordable, livable housing, environmental justice, health care, education and jobs, and family safety. I use the skills, courage, persistence, and sensitivity I gained setting national precedents to treat everyone with respect, understanding, and compassion; handle issues efficiently but patiently; and make courageous yet reasoned, articulate decisions. Over 150 of my opinions are published and used in future cases. Regardless of publication, I strive to effect positive change, am mindful of the law's human impact, and remember my experiences as a lawyer and in the community.
