Candidate Biography
Personal Statement
  • I, Joe Cawley, am a candidate for the position of Broome County Court Judge. I was raised in Broome County, and graduated from Maine-Endwell High School, earned my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Niagara University and my Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law in Queens, New York. After law school, I served as an Assistant District Attorney for Nassau County until returning home to Broome County to raise my family and work in private practice. For more than 20 years, I have practiced in County Courts across the State. I have extensive experience handling felony cases on both sides of the courtroom, and will bring a balanced perspective to the bench that will serve to ensure a fair trial for both victims and defendants. I have prosecuted or defended hundreds of individuals accused of felony criminal offenses, tried nine murder cases to verdict, and represented defendants as assigned counsel in several capital murder prosecutions. I recently received a qualified rating from the State’s independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission, as well as the highest possible qualification rating from the Broome County Bar Association.
