Candidate Biography
Personal Statement
  • Judge Flanagan sits as the only judge in District Court hearing civil cases in 1st District Court. He lectures extensively in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes for attorneys at Touro Law Center, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the Federal Inns of Court, the Nassau County Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He was in private practice as a law clerk and attorney from 1979 until 1997 when he became a Principal Law Secretary in Supreme Court. During his time in private practice, he was a litigator in the field of tort law, handling cases for plaintiffs and defendants in the areas of medical malpractice and negligence. He is an Eagle Scout, having achieved the rank at the age of 15 and he continues to serve the Boy Scouts of America today as a merit badge counselor. He is a former Little League baseball coach, member of his parish school board and a member of the Sons of Italy, having served as Treasurer and Orator for the John Bosco Lodge. Lastly, he was recently asked to participate in a roundtable seminar, with other judges and lawyers, by the Federal Trade Commission which will be held in Washington, D.C. on December 4th.
