Personal Statement
  • Judge Cohen has dedicated his career to public service working for 18 years in all three branches of New York State government. His experience includes practicing before the State and Federal Courts and proficiency in civil and criminal practice and procedure. Since 2004 he has served a Judge of the New York City Housing Court. Prior to his judicial appointment, he served as a New York State Assistant Attorney General and as Court Attorney to a New York State Supreme Court Justice. He currently serves as Vice-President of the Association of Housing Court Judges and also chairs its legislative committee, co-chairs New York County Lawyers’ Association’s Civil Court Practice Section and is a member of its Law-Related Education committee. He is a founding member and Co-Chair of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Alumni Association’s Real Estate Practice Group and serves on the Alumni Association’s Executive Committee and the City Bar’s Coop and Condo Law Committee. This year Judge Cohen was rated “most highly qualified” for the position of Civil Court Judge by the Independent Judicial Screening Panel and was rated “approved” by the City Bar’s Judiciary Committee.
